Interview with Mr. Dimitrij Piciga, Ex-Director General, Slovenian Tourist Board, from Vinay,  www.BookMyHotel.biz
BMH: What is your strategy for attracting tourists from Asian countries?
DG

Slovenia's location in Central Europe and the proximity of major Central European cities means that it is easily accessible for Asian tourists undertaking a European tour. Venice is a mere 185 km from the Slovenian border and Vienna a mere 245 km. In addition, the Slovenian national airline, Adria Airways, has good daily connections from Ljubljana to all major European capitals. Guests from Asia are attracted by the chance to explore the historical and cultural heritage of Europe. Slovenia's  medieval towns, with their numerous cultural events and castles, offer visitors a rich variety of experience. Lovers of activity holidays and unspoilt nature will also find what they need in Slovenia.

BMH: What makes the Brand Slovenia different from its direct competitors?
DG

As mentioned in the previous answer, Slovenia is easily accessible and close to a number of major European cities. Travel within the country is also easy and quick – the size of the country makes it possible to see a great deal in a short space of time.
Its geographical characteristics make Slovenia a year-round ‘boutique’ destination – the natural beauties of the Adriatic coast, the mountains and the plains, the pristine forests and natural lakes, the thermal and mineral springs, the underground world of the caves, all enriched by a diversity of flora and fauna and by sites of cultural and historical interest. Slovenia’s exceptional diversity and accessibility give it a definite advantage over many other destinations.
Slovenes are a hospitable people who are always delighted to receive guests. Language is no obstacle, with English being widely spoken.

BMH What are you going to do to increase airlines frequency to Slovenia from Asia particularly India?
DG Slovenia’s national airline, Adria Airways, is in talks with Indian airlines regarding the possibility of opening up air routes. .
BMH The global tourism industry is facing a world-wide financial crisis and the swine flu disease. How does this affect your destination and your vision of the tourism industry in general?
DG

Last year went better than had been forecast at the beginning of the year by those in the tourist industry and indicated by the conditions in the economy. Slovenian tourism did not escape the global economic crisis of 2009. It was only through numerous additional promotional activities and additional efforts made in cooperation with the tourist industry that we were able, despite the recession, to record a mere one-per-cent drop on 2008’s record figures.
