LIPICA STUDFARM
Lipica is a settlement with a stud farm on the karst
plateau south of Sežana. It gained worldwide fame with the
breeding of Lipizzaner horses, named after Lipica, which is an
original Slovenian name (lipica - a small linden tree).
The stud farm is the only unified, intact medieval farm estate
in our country. The breeding of karst horses and the Lipizzaner
breed started more intensively after 1580, when the Habsburg
Archduke Charles bought the older estate of the bishop of
Trieste. www.lipica.org
BLED ISLAND
Above the surface of Bled Lake rises the only real island in
Slovenia. In a glacier hollow there is what remains of an Ice
Age limestone moraine covered with trees. It is a fashionable
mountain resort where skating and curling can be enjoyed in
winter and swimming and rowing during summer.
The island probably had a special meaning already in prehistoric
times and our famous poet Prešeren praised its Slavic sanctuary.
One can come to the island by a special boat with a roof, called
a pletna. This boat, conducted by one rower with two oars, is
known only in Bled. (www.bled.si)
Lake Bohinj is yet another attraction which needs
special mention, it is surrounded by breath-taking nature.
